History - What Were Seaside Holidays Like?

As part of their History topic learning about what seaside holidays were like, Year 1 went on a trip to Silloth. Silloth was a popular seaside town for people in Carlisle during the Victorian era as there was a steam train that used to run from Carlisle to Silloth.

First, we went to see the lifeboats at the RNLI. They showed us around and talked to us about how the RNLI has changed over the years. They told us that instead of a tractor pulling the lifeboat into the sea (which is what happens now), it would have been horses that did the job in the past.

At lunch, we sat amongst the pine trees in the adventure playground. These trees were planted during the Victorian era and had grown really tall. It was a lovely woodland and we had a great time playing on the adventure playground too.

We visited the ice cream shop and we all got to choose one scoop of our favourite ice cream. We sat on the Green and played games together. This is similar to what people in the past would have liked to have done while on holiday by the seaside.

Next, we went for a walk to see the Victorian buildings. We spotted the pagoda which is situated on top of a hill and looks out to sea; the old baths that were built two years after the railway opened (this is now an amusement arcade); the church which has a really tall spire and can be seen for miles around and the colourful buildings along the high street that were built as hotels for people to stay in during the Victorian era.

We continued our walk to the sensory garden. We were really quiet as we walked through so that we could appreciate properly all the beautiful plants and show our respect to other members of the public that were enjoying the area too.

After that we walked to the promenade. We sat down and took in some deep breaths. Before we set off on our trip, we took some deep breaths in our classroom so that we could compare them to our breaths at the seaside. We decided that the air was 'fresher' at the sea and could understand why people would travel to the seaside to enjoy the fresh, sea air.

We had a great time on our History trip to Silloth!

Art - Natural Materials

Year 1 have started the Summer term learning about the artist Andy Goldsworthy. He is a British artist who was born in Cheshire in 1956. His artwork is often 'temporary' as he uses natural materials to create his artwork such as stones, wood, leaves and even snow!

We went outside and found our own natural materials. We were able to find different shaped stones and all kinds of plants such as rhubarb, mint leaves and dandelions.

Back in class we grouped the materials into different categories. We decided they could be grouped by putting all the same items together, or by colour, by size, by texture or by height.

Computing - Robots

In Computing we have been learning how to move a robot! We are learning to combine forwards, backwards and four directional commands to make sequences.

Art - African Massai Tribe

In Art we have been learning about the Massai tribe in Africa. We learned they make their own clothes and jewellery, using bright colours and repeating patterns. We have been using different media to create our own 3D masks, headdresses, African sunsets and water jars.

Religion and Worldviews - Baptism

Year 1 have learning about baptism and the important role it has for Christian families and the wider Christian church community. We learned that when a new baby is born into a Christian family, a special service called a Christening is held at a church. This service welcomes the new baby into the Christian community.

We also went to St Michael's church where Rev. Ben Phillips showed us what happens during a Christening service and told us about the promises which are made by family members and the church community. Thank you Ben for showing us this special service.

Maths - Number Facts

Year 1 are doing so well learning their number facts up to 20 that some very special visitors have come to say hello! They can also measure themselves against the Numberblocks and check to see if they are growing.

Trip to Stocks Wood Outdoor Centre

Year 1 had a fantastic time learning about maps and the outdoors during their trip to Stocks Wood Outdoor Centre. The children took park in lots of activities during the day, working individually and together in teams. At the end of the day, the children learned how to make a fire and even got to toast some marshmallows!
